Engaging in Community Initiatives By Rhonda Kelly-Duncan Members of the Back Country Horsemen of Northwest Arkansas (BCHNWA) have been actively engaged in several community initiatives, showcasing their commitment to environmental stewardship and community involvement. Recently, BCHNWA successfully concluded a cleanup project at the Wedington Wildlife Management Area, a venture initiated in 2023 and completed in May 2024. Spearheaded by regional leaders Mark Varner and Rhonda Kelly-Duncan, the effort received substantial support from Kevin Harmon, an adjacent landowner who provided his pickup truck for transporting collected waste. In addition to their conservation efforts, BCHNWA also participated in the Rodeo of the Ozarks, coordinated by Jacci Ryan, where they received recognition for their outstanding participation. The organization earned the second-place trophy in the parade for the best-dressed organization, with members riding in the grand entry and staffing an informational booth highlighting their activities. Meanwhile, BCHNWA members have pivoted their efforts towards aiding Hobbs State Park, which recently suffered significant damage from a tornado. Equipped with certified sawyers, the group led by region leader Debbie Townsend and assisted by Jim Center is actively involved in clearing trails, a project expected to extend over a considerable period. BCHNWA has extended an invitation to all other area equestrian organizations and individuals to assist when they can. The Northwest Arkansas chapter has expanded into the Ozark National Forest area south of Fayetteville, centered around Mountainburg. This move aims to enhance environmental stewardship and maintain the area for public enjoyment. Charlie Vaughn has been appointed regional leader for this new region. His responsibilities include coordinating efforts to preserve the area's natural beauty and promote responsible outdoor activities. Marla Walker finds money while working at WWMA.
