Spring 2025 Newsletter: Chainsaw Certification Success & Growing Partnerships

Chainsaw Certification Success & Growing Partnerships
By Author Rhonda Kelly-Duncan, Information Officer

In March, members of BCHNWA proudly participated in our second official chainsaw certification event, joined with members of a local bicycle group. The training included classroom instruction and hands-on practical assessment in alignment with United States Forest Service safety standards. This collaboration not only certified new sawyers but also helped build stronger relationships between equestrians and other outdoor enthusiasts.

We’re thrilled to continue adding equestrian-certified sawyers to our Arkansas Back Country Horsemen chapters, enhancing our ability to maintain trails and respond to downed trees in the backcountry.

Trail Safety & Education Campaign Update Our Arkansas Trails Safety and Education Campaign is actively interviewing equestrians who have experienced dangerous encounters with motorized vehicles, e-bikes, motorbikes, or trail users unfamiliar with proper trail etiquette. As part of our mission, we’re working to spread awareness that equines have the right-of-way on all shared trails and roadways.

Through outreach and education, we aim to help others understand equine behavior especially the nature of horses and mules as prey animals—and to promote the message that Safety is Everyone’s Business. We welcome the opportunity to speak with other outdoor user groups to educate trail users on what to do when they encounter horses or mules on the trail.

Packing In at White Rock
This spring, Regional Leader Charlie Vaughn led our first pack-in ride and overnight horseback camping trip in the White Rock area. Participants experienced the rugged charm of the Ozark Boston Mountains, just as early travelers once did. Riders packed in supplies, set up picket lines, built shelters, and embraced the adventure of backcountry camping —all while gaining valuable knowledge and making great memories.

Hobbs State Park Spring Ride
In April, Regional Leader Debbie Ludolph led a ride through Hobbs State Park, focusing on the War Eagle Loop. Many of the trails had recently reopened following the tornado damage from 2024. Twelve riders, including youth from the Goshen Riding Club, enjoyed the scenic ride and the opportunity to explore the recovering landscape together. BCH in Arkansas

Did you know Arkansas is home to four Back Country Horsemen chapters? Each one is dedicated to preserving our right to ride, protecting equestrian access to public lands, and promoting safety, stewardship, and education on the trails.
