It is simply meant to provide information on riding stables, in different parts of Northwest Arkansas, that are known to local riding clubs as of April 2025. No equestrian facility can be all things to all riders. Those seeking lessons -- whether for themselves or their children -- are encouraged to study websites and social media, visit facilities of interest, be very clear about riding interests and goals as well as time and budgetary constraints, and ask lots of questions. Teaming up with the Northwest Arkansas Equine Coalition, BCHNWA hosted an information booth to promote awareness of local equestrian organizations, provide live demonstrations, and engage young visitors with rides on Rocky, a horse owned by a BCHNWA member.

BCHNWA riders also took part in the 39th annual National Championship Chuckwagon Races in Clinton, Arkansas, where they carried the Back Country Horsemen flag in the grand entry parade. Their appearance was featured in a live-streamed broadcast on the Chuckwagon Channel, reaching a global audience in one of the nation’s largest equine gatherings.

In the wake of a tornado that struck Northwest Arkansas in June, BCHNWA volunteers have focused on restoring trails at Pea Ridge and Hobbs State Park. Certified sawyers have been instrumental in clearing debris, ensuring these popular trails are safe and accessible for riders once more.

Adding to their lineup of community activities, BCHNWA held two Moonlight Rides in the Wedington Wildlife Management Area and organized a fall ride for members along the scenic War Eagle Creek near Huntsville, Arkansas. These events were well attended, building camaraderie and celebrating the region’s equestrian heritage.

Over the past year, BCHNWA has hosted more than 39 events, underscoring its mission to keep trails open and accessible. They encourage more equestrians to join their efforts and help preserve trail access across the region.

For membership information, visit www.bchnwa.net or email info.bchnwa@gmail.com.
Phone- 1-479-308-6671

news_article_11_11_24.pdf

File Size:

78 kb

File Type:

pdf

Download File

Fall 2024 Newsletter: Over 39 Events in 12 Months

https://www.bchnwa.net/recent-news/fall-2024-newletter-over-39-events-is-12-months

https://www.bchnwa.net/recent-news/fall-2024-newletter-over-39-events-is-12-months#comments

Newsletter

Fall 2024 Newsletter: Over 39 events in 12 monthsBy Rhonda Kelly-DuncanThe Back Country Horsemen of Northwest Arkansas (BCHNWA) recently participated in the Washington County Horse Show at the Pauline Whitaker Arena. In collaboration with the Northwest Arkansas Equine Coalition providing an information booth to educate attendees about the various equestrian organizations in the area. The booth featured demonstrations and offered children's rides on Rocky, a horse belonging to one of BCHNWA's members.

A team of eight BCH riders and campers represented BCHNWA at the 39th annual National Championship Chuckwagon Races in Clinton, Arkansas. Proudly carrying the Back Country Horsemen flag in the grand entry parade, they were featured in a live-strea1n broadcast on the Chuckwagon Channel, which reached millions of viewers worldwide. This event is one of the largest equine gatherings in the United States.

Following the devastating tornado that impacted Northwest Arkansas in June, BCHNWA has been dedicated to restoring trails, focusing on Pea Ridge and Hobbs State Park. Our certified sawyers have worked diligently to clear deadfall and debris, ensuring these trails are safe and rideable once again. BCHNWA also hosted two Moonlight Rides in the Wedington Wildlife Management Area, as well as a fall ride for members on private property near War Eagle Creek in Huntsville, Arkansas. These events were well attended, fostering community connections and celebrating our shared passion for equestrian activities.

BCHNWA has hosted over 39 events in the past 12 months and hopes more equestrians will join in the effort to keep trails open for riders.

*Membership Information can be obtained by visiting www.bchnwa.net or by emailing info.bchnwa@gmail.com

Summer 2024 Newsletter: Community Initiative

https://www.bchnwa.net/recent-news/summer-2024-newsletter-community-initiative

https://www.bchnwa.net/recent-news/summer-2024-newsletter-community-initiative#comments

Newsletter

Engaging in Community InitiativesBy Rhonda Kelly-DuncanMembers of the Back Country Horsemen of Northwest Arkansas (BCHNWA) have been actively engaged in several community initiatives, showcasing their commitment to environmental stewardship and community involvement.Recently, BCHNWA successfully concluded a cleanup project at the Wedington Wildlife Management Area, a venture initiated in 2023 and completed in May 2024. Spearheaded by regional leaders Mark Varner and Rhonda Kelly-Duncan, the effort received substantial support from Kevin Harmon, an adjacent landowner who provided his pickup truck for transporting collected waste.

In addition to their conservation efforts, BCHNWA also participated in the Rodeo of the Ozarks, coordinated by Jacci Ryan, where they received recognition for their outstanding participation. The organization earned the second-place trophy in the parade for the best-dressed organization, with members riding in the grand entry and staffing an informational booth highlighting their activities.

Meanwhile, BCHNWA members have pivoted their efforts towards aiding Hobbs State Park, which recently suffered significant damage from a tornado. Equipped with certified sawyers, the group led by region leader Debbie Townsend and assisted by Jim Center is actively involved in clearing trails, a project expected to extend over a considerable period. BCHNWA has extended an invitation to all other area equestrian organizations and individuals to assist when they can.

The Northwest Arkansas chapter has expanded into the Ozark National Forest area south of Fayetteville, centered around Mountainburg. This move aims to enhance environmental stewardship and maintain the area for public enjoyment. When a suitable certification class could not be found, two members of the group studied under USFS professionals and became instructors themselves.

Participants were first required to undergo CPR training prior to their chainsaw certification to ensure they possessed essential life-saving skills, as well as each participant having their own chainsaw equipment and PPE, which is quite an expense.

This year's 2024 certification training was led by retired professor and equine enthusiast Henry Crouch, Arkansas Chainsaw Coordinator Larkin Floyd, and Backcountry Horsemen of Northwest Arkansas President Jim Center.

The chainsaw training, which commenced with an intensive classroom seminar, prioritized safety and preparedness. Additionally, the hands-on, in-the-field portion of the class further honed their skills.

The certification process culminated in a supportive atmosphere, with guest speakers including USFS Officer Kirk Vermillion, Superintendent Tim Scott, and Park Interpreter Cara Helton providing valuable insight and encouragement.

Max and Jacci Ryan provided a meal featuring Max's renowned chili and Texas cornbread, as well as Lynne Patterson, who provided homemade soup.

Ranger Allen Smith provided the final sign-off. With assistance from Roy Eastep and Patrick Scott, the Backcountry Horsemen of Arkansas proudly announced the certification of Class A, B, and C sawyers. The newly certified Class A and B sawyers included Chuck and Carol Bitting, Donna Blake, Mary Cole, Rhonda Kelly Duncan, Pam Floyd, Gary Gerber, Betty Van Houten, Rhonda Keeter, Michael McGee, Robert Willett, Bonnie Sheppard, and Dan Greasy with Ozark Highland Trails.

With all four Arkansas chapters of the Backcountry Horsemen of America—Buffalo River, Ozark, Sylamore, and Northwest Arkansas—united, Arkansas equestrians are better prepared to help protect the natural beauty of their trails.

At top, a group photo of Back Country Horsemen members; In just four hours, volunteers created a half mile serpentine trail, giving war veterans an inspiring haven in the great outdoors.

In May 2023, Jacci Ryan rallied the regional team, leading another effort at Warhorse Legacy Foundation: this time to clear a trail. Armed with chainsaws and heavy equipment generously provided by 2023 President Jim Center, we conquered downed trees and debris, turning obstacles into pathways of possibility.

Together, we exemplified the strength that arises when a com- munity unites for a common purpose, showcasing the transformative impact that collaboration can have on creating meaningful trails and fostering a legacy of positive change.

But it's more than projects; it's a testament to our love for Back Country Horsemen of Northwest Arkansas and Warhorse Legacy. Together, we're making a positive impact beyond the trails, resonating far and wide.

In 2024, BCHNWA members plan to continue our partnership with WLF to make life better for veterans. We invite other volunteers to join us on this exciting journey of making a difference!

For more information on Back Country Horsemen of Northwest Arkansas, visit our website at www.bchnwa.net

Above and middle and far right photos on next page, members
from the University of Arkansas Student Veterans Association lend
a helping hand. This collaborative effort, uniting all four chapters, signifies a historic moment for equestrians in the state, highlighting their unwavering commitment to trail preservation.

The road to mastery was not without its challenges. Certification was a requirement to utilize saws on USFS and National Park Service (NPS) lands where Backcountry members work tirelessly to maintain trails. For years, efforts to find a suitable certification class proved elusive. However, two members of the group studied under USFS professionals and became instructors themselves.

Participants were first required to undergo CPR training prior to their chainsaw certifications to ensure they possessed essential life-saving skills, as well as each participant having their own chainsaw equipment and PPE, which is quite an expense.

This year’s 2024 certification training was led by retired professor and equine enthusiast Henry Crouch, Arkansas Chainsaw Coordinator Larkin Floyd, and Backcountry Horsemen of Northwest Arkansas President Jim Center. The chainsaw training, which commenced with an intensive classroom seminar, prioritized safety and preparedness. Additionally, the hands-on, in-the-field portion of the class further honed their skills.

The certification process culminated in a supportive atmosphere, with guest speakers including USFS Officer Kirk Vermillion, Superintendent Tim Scott, and Park Interpreter Cara Helton providing valuable insights and encouragement. The event benefited greatly from the warm acknowledgment of our fabulous cooks, Max and Jacci Ryan, who provided a nourishing meal featuring Max’s renowned chili and Texas cornbread, as well as Lynne Patterson, who provided homemade soup. Their contributions certainly enhanced the class experience.

Ranger Allen Smith provided the final sign-off. With assistance from Roy Eatep and Patrick Scott, the Backcountry Horsemen of Arkansas proudly announced the certification of Class A, B, and C sawyers, highlighting their determination and perseverance. The newly certified Class A and B sawyers, including Chuck and Carol Bitting, Donna Blake, Mary Cole, Rhonda Kelly-Duncan, Pam Floyd, Gary Gerber, Betty Van Houten, Rhonda Keeter, Michael McGee, Robert Willett, Bonnie Sheppard, Dan Greasy with Ozark highland trails, all embody the spirit of stewardship and excellence. With all four Arkansas chapters of the Backcountry Horsemen of America—Buffalo River, Ozark, Sylamore, and Northwest Arkansas—united, Arkansas equestrians are poised to confront future challenges and protect the natural beauty of their trails.

As these newly certified sawyers embark on their next chapter, they serve as an inspiration to others, demonstrating how dedication and courage can transform the impossible into the “I’mpossible.”

https://www.bcha.org/
https://arkansasbch.org/
https://www.bchnwa.net

Fall 2023 Newsletter: Pea Ridge Grand Reopening

https://www.bchnwa.net/recent-news/fall-2023-newsletter

https://www.bchnwa.net/recent-news/fall-2023-newsletter#comments

Uncategorized

BCHNWA Fall 2023 NewsletterArticle by Rhonda Kelly-Duncan, Information Officer BCHNWABack Country Horseman of Northwest Arkansas partnered with Pea Ridge National Park this year.
